“When you think about the design of a luminaire, you design everything except the light. You design the shade, the base, et cetera, but in the end you screw the light in. I wanted to turn that around and start the design process with the qualities of light itself.” This is how Dutch designer Arnout Meijer explains the concept behind his functional (and gorgeous) lamps and his gorgeous (and functional) sculptures. Given the havoc that screen display light is wreaking upon our circadian rhythms, Meijer wants to create lighting sources that are sensitive to the effects of temperature and colour on the human body. While his Thanks for the Sun lamp series allows the user to adapt the temperature of light according to time of day, his Thanks for the Planet (pictured here) sculptures present a fixed palette of gradually changing, luscious, mood-enhancing colours.
