It may seem a stereotype, but growing up on the wild, vast and isolated continent of Australia means splashing about on pristine beaches, participating in almost every sport imaginable, and constant barbecues (or did for this author). And with all that space, and all those distances, it means road trips: cars full of enthusiasts spending endless hours driving across harsh red terrain with jumping kangaroos and scorching heat – only to arrive a bit dehydrated, exhausted and overheated at ...a very big thing.
With so much flat space, a mania has developed for outsized objects, which punctuate the horizon of long road trips and create landmarks for otherwise anonymous places. So on your next sweltering journey through the great southern land, don’t be alarmed if you come across a bunch of people walking into a giant cow’s bottom – it’s just an Australian thing. p (ltv)
